Part of Bellamy Young’s drive to spread the word about hepactic encephalopathy (HE) — a complication of cirrhosis in which your liver doesn’t properly filter out toxins that can in turn cause cognitive issues like disorientation and confusion once they reach the brain — comes from her desire to break down stigma.
When Bellamy — star of hits like ‘Scandal’ and ‘The Other Black Girl’ — was just 15, her father passed away, two years after being diagnosed with HE. She's partnering with Salix Pharmaceuticals on UnderstandingHe.com, an awareness campaign that offers tools of support while shedding a needed spotlight on this condition.
