How minority stress impacts LGB people

A new study examines the impact homophobic prejudice and discrimination can have on the health and well-being of lesbian, gay and bisexual people.

The study's lead author David M. Huebner, PhD, associate professor of prevention and community health at the Milken Institute School of Public Health, said that this increased stress can have a domino effect of negative health outcomes, including increased production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Past research has shown that adaptive elevations in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol production can accumulate over time.

Katie Brooks Biello, PhD, of Brown University School of Public Health, discussed the cumulative impact this frequent level of minority stress can have on LGB people, what a similar study might show when it comes to the effect discrimination has on other members of the greater LGBTQIA+ community -- such as transgender people and gender nonconforming people -- and good strategies for managing this stress.
